Improving Home With Feng Shui

Feng Shui – an ancient Chinese aesthetic system that uses the laws of geography and astronomy to improve a person’s life through receiving positive energy. In Feng Shui terminologies, energy is referred as qi or Chi. Qi means air, or gas that rides with the wind and gets entrapped by water. It is believed that the Chi can improve a particular aspect of a person’s life by activating it through elements and locations favorable to the Chi. The concept of Feng Shui has in existence since time immemorial, which has been passed on from generations to generations. Many environmental scholars have found this practice to be true in many cases; thus integrated it in some traditional practices to promote good life.

Now, Feng Shui is practiced more at home using the Bagua grid. The grid represents 9 important aspects of human’s life namely, career; travel; creativity and children; love; reputation; wealth; family and health; and wisdom. Since it is a grid, it is consists of 3 columns and 3 rows, representing each area called “gua.” The center box of the grid is the fulcrum, which represents the health area and is energized by the element of Earth and the yellow color. Underneath the middle box is the career, which is represented by the element of Water and the black color. Above the middle box is the reputation box, represented by the element of Fire and the red color. To the right of the career box is the People/Travel box that is represented by the Gray or Silver color. Above it is the creativity/children box that is represented by the element of Metal and the white color.  Above the creativity box is the love box represented by the pink color. On the left side of the career box is the wisdom box, which is energized by the color blue. Above it is the family box, which is energized by the element of Wood and the color green. Finally, above the family box is the prosperity box, which is known to be represented by the color Purple.

To use Feng Shui in improving a home, the whole layout plan of the house must be fit in the grid so that the layout, arrangements, decorations and colors will be replaced or changed according to the grid. The Bagua grid doesn’t change. It works when the aforementioned colors and elements are placed in exact order or locations mentioned in the grid.

Home Improvement Tips

Here are some home improvement tips for the bedroom, bathroom and patio.

Bedroom

Photobucket

Bedrooms are important part of the house as these are where family members rest and sleep. Sometimes, when a bedroom doesn’t seem to be inviting anymore, it must need a makeover. To redo the looks of a bedroom, it requires rearranging furniture and adding or subtracting objects. The bed is the basic subject for improvement. A saggy and too small bed may not be good for a growing person anymore; thus needs to be changed. Now to change a bed, it is necessary to consider the life-span of the bed, the size and the style. There are beds that could last for 10 years or more. Buying this kind will save money in the long run because homeowners do not need to change beds every 2 years. The size depends on how big the person is using it or how many are actually sleeping on the bed. Of course the style matters as it should complement the whole layout of the room.

Bathroom

Bathrooms should be clean and neat all the time as this is where molds and bacteria first develop. The first things that are normally changed in a bathroom are the curtains, mirrors and other decorations that set the mood and theme of each bathroom. Also, water and lighting systems are changed too if needed. Normally, when a household is cutting on the utility bills, all light bulbs are changed to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) or energy-saving lights.

Patio

The patio is the place where small retreats, meditations and barbeque parties are normally done. A home may not have a patio; thus when a need to have one is seen, a construction is done. To build a patio, it is necessary to consider the use of the facility. For example, if patio will be used more for evening parties, it should be built with closures as protection from the rain. Otherwise, an open deck will already be enough.

Top Renovations That Won’t Drastically Raise Property Values

Summary: Depending on your personal lifestyle, renovations might be necessary. That being said, not all renovations will increase the value of your property.

One of the best aspects of owning your own home is the ability to freely renovate – as far as your contract goes. Depending on the condition of the house, when you put it on the market, and how desirable the area is, you might end up profiting a hefty sum when you find the right buyer. Even if you are not planning on selling your house in the near future, you should be aware of the various renovations that will not boost the value of your home.

Luxurious Appliances

Some homeowners are stuck with the mentality that high-end appliances will drastically increase property values. An expensive and sophisticated kitchen could be perfect for the person who loves cooking. Stainless steel appliances and a large marble island will instantly grab the attention of your visitor but you have to keep in mind that not every potential buyer will want what you’re installing. A construction consulting company can be looked into if you aren’t sure where to start.

Large Garage Space

Many people feel like they simply do not have enough storage space in their house. If you want an extra space to park your car or if you simply want more room for your belongings, then expanding your garage might be a no-brainer. Although you might get the space you need for storage or even an extra vehicle, whoever is looking at your house might be looking to expand elsewhere.

Firms like Lyle Charles Consulting will tell you that a garage is usually something that tenants tend to expect and might not be inclined to spend more on.

Using Technology to Grow Your Construction Firm

Summary: Following some simple strategies can help you grow your construction company.

The barrier for entry for starting a business has never been lower. There are a number of resources available online that can take out a lot of the guesswork involved in starting something from the ground up. Even if you have not gone to business school, some digging around online can help you find high quality material, from affordable online classes to articles written by people who have experience in the field, that can help you get started.

Learn From Others

If you have an internet connection you have access to a tremendous amount of information. The good thing about this is that you can find information on nearly any topic imaginable. The downside to this, on the other hand, is that it can be challenging to sift through the sheer amount of information that is available. How can you decide what is reliable and what is not? The best way you can use the internet as a learning tool is to do your research and learn from different sources. A report posted by a reputable construction claims management company, for example, might be more reliable than a relatively unknown blog you stumbled upon.

Use the information you find to help understand different aspects of running a construction business and to familiarize yourself with the industry, as a whole. Not relying on one single source, but rather using a variety of tools, can help give you a well-rounded perspective. That being said, you need to find a balance between researching and doing. Experimenting, trying new things, finding out how you like to work, making mistakes, and ultimately learning from them is how you will build your intuition.

Stand Out Online

In the past, it seemed like the best way to grow your business was to advertise in-person or through print avenues. Today, however, there is great strength in using online tools to grow your brand and get people’s attention. Firms like Lyle Charles Consulting have clean websites that people can easily digest to get a feel for whether or not they want to do business with them. Creating a path of least resistance to the customers can be highly beneficial.

Having a robust online presence, such as through social media and online resources, can help attract clients. Even if the person who stumbles upon your content is not in need of construction services, leaving a good impression can lead to word-of-mouth recommendations.

The Pros of Renting an RV for a Camping Trip

Summary: Renting an RV for a camping trip could be a little pricy but there are various reasons why it might be worth your money.

If you are planning for an upcoming camping trip and are trying to make reservations, you should consider renting an RV. Driving an RV would be more expensive than using your own car but there are some advantages to renting an RV that make it worth the investment.

The Price of Comfort

Going on a camping trip is a bit different from going on a standard trip out of town. When you are staying at a hotel in a neighboring town or city you do not have to worry about your sleeping situation, where you will bathe, and where you can hang out and unwind. If you were to drive up to the mountains with your own car and just a standard tent, you would have to figure a lot of these things out.

Rather than sleeping outside in a cold tent, you could sleep indoors on a comfortable mattress. Even though it could get cold inside of the RV without any heaters, the cold winds will be one less thing for you to worry about.

Everything in One Spot

Another big advantage to using an RV is being able to have almost everything you could need during your trip in one spot. Depending on the RV you choose to rent, you could have a refrigerator, functioning sink, shower, and table all inside. If you do not want to worry about buying furniture for the various situations you might find yourself in, you can rent an RV that already has all of these basic pieces.

How to Keep Your Patio Looking Fresh

Summary: If your patio is currently too dirty for your tastes it might be time to restore it.

It has been said that a clean house can boost your mood. Nobody wants to come home to a messy house with items all over the place and dirty floors. If you have a patio you might feel like it is usually dirty. Keeping it clean can be a challenge that can feel overwhelming. If you want your patio to look fresh and inviting you can take a few measures to keep it looking clean throughout the year. Keeping your patio tidy does not need to be an expensive task but it will take some time to restore it to a solid condition.

Deep Clean

This step may seem a bit obvious but it is still worth bringing up. If your patio is incredibly dirty, then sweeping, wiping furniture down, and doing some general cleaning can take a good amount of time. For really stubborn dirt marks that will not go away with general cleaning, using a water pressure cleaner could be just what you need to break them up. There could be a lot of built-up grime that can be tough to get rid of but taking the time to thoroughly clean everything will be well worth it.

Clean Regularly

Once everything is clean, the key step is to clean it regularly. Every weekend, spend fifteen minutes to half an hour cleaning up your patio. If you keep this habit up maintaining a clean patio will not take as long as that initial cleaning session does. At this point it will be much easier to keep the patio clean, rather than waiting for the dirt to build up again.

Tips on looking after your mailbox

When it comes to yard maintenance, one of the last things that comes to a homeowners mind is the Mailbox. Most of the time go unnoticed for very long periods until something happens like damage, rust, or it starts to fall apart.

For a homeowner who is interested in mailbox maintenance and upkeep, here are some basic tricks and tips you can employ to keep your mailbox looking new.

First, take care of the loose hinges on the door. Make sure they are tight and oil them regularly. Make sure you replace the faded or missing house numbers and somehow don’t let rust develop. As soon as rust sets in, it is just a matter of time before it needs replacement.

One easy way to keep the mailbox in good shape, is to paint it often. As soon as it starts to chip, peel, or fade, give it a fresh coat of paint. It will look like new. Sandpaper or a wire brush the mailbox to remove mold or rust. Use an all-purpose cleaner on the surface before you paint and remove any grit.

The right time to paint the flag and the door of the mailbox is when the paint coats and the primer on the mailbox are drying. Before you reassemble the mailbox make sure the paint is dry.  Lastly, if you need to replace a mailbox that has been knocked down, remember to check with your local postmaster about rules and guidelines on how to proceed with a replacement.

Getting Your Dog Used to a New Bed

Summary: If you purchase a bed for your dog it could take some time and effort before your pet is comfortable enough to use it.

Your process for getting a new bed for yourself is probably fairly simple. Once your current bed is no longer in proper working condition you can simply donate it or throw it away to make space for a new one. Once you have purchased a new mattress all that is left to do is put some sheets on it. Unfortunately, it is not that simple for dogs. Simply placing a new dog bed on the floor for your pet to use is not enough to get your dog accustomed to it. Your dog will need some encouragement to help him warm up to the bed before he feels comfortable enough to lay down on it. This process can take some time.

Associate the Bed with Happiness

One you can get your dog to feel more comfortable near the bed is to associate the bed with happy things. If you purchased a small bed from The Foam Factory, your dog may not understand what its purpose is. Place some of your dog’s favorite toys near the bed so he knows that the bed is a safe place to be. If your dog gets near the bed feel free to reward him with treats and praise.

Give the Bed a Familiar Scent

Scent can play a powerful role in how we feel about certain places. A scent you recognize from a happy event could make you more joyous, while a scent that reminds you of a sad time could negatively impact your mood.

If your dog has a favorite blanket lay it on top of the new bed. This will help turn the bed from a couch foam into a familiar place. When your dog approaches the bed and is greeted with scents he knows, he will likely feel calmer and more likely to lay on top of it. Additionally, you can rub your hand on the bed so your dog smells someone he trusts when on the bed.

What carpet is best for stairs?

Stairs are the most common place to add carpeting, but choosing the right type of carpeting for your stairs is key to ensuring its durability and to reducing maintenance costs. Here are a few areas to consider when selecting carpeting for your stairs.

Carpet quality – Your stairs will have a lot of traffic as they will be in constant use. Therefore, it is best to use the highest quality carpeting you can afford, as it will end up lasting you a lot longer.

Durability – Look for carpeting that is made for stairs and those that provide sufficient padding.

Thickness – Ensure that your carpet is the right thickness, as a carpet that is too thick can be a safety hazard. When a carpet is too thick, it can leave the foot with less support, causing slips, and falls. Plus, you will find that carpet installers will not like to work with thick carpets on stairs, as it can be difficult to wrap the mat on the stairs. Look at a carpet with a pile height of 1/2 inch or less and a carpet padding of 7/16 inch or less with a pile density rating of at least 8 pounds.

Soil resistance – Stain resistance is not that important as your carpet will not get too many spills. However soil resistance is essential especially if your stairs are very close to an outdoor entrance. To reduce residue, look at placing a mat to remind family and guests to clean their feet before they come into your home. You could also ask people to remove all footwear before they enter your home.

Why Your Next House Should be a Tiny Home

Summary: Living in a small house may not sound ideal to many but there are plenty of benefits to opting for cozy living quarters.

Many dream of living in a spacious home with many rooms. Having a large house has its advantages, such as having more physical space to move around and more storage space for your belongings. Despite the average family size decreasing, the average house size has steadily increased.

Is more space always better? During the past decade or so there has been a wave of people moving in the opposite direction by seeking out or even creating houses that are intentionally small. “Tiny homes” are, on average, no bigger than 8 feet by 20 feet, with the total livable area averaging around 120 square-feet. The small size of these houses makes them easy to tow and actually prevents owners from needing building permits. There are a wide variety of reasons why you may want to look into getting your own tiny home.

The Ability to Move Around

Tiny homes are unique in that, legally speaking, they are not quite classified the same way standard houses and apartments are. Tiny homes are seen as ambiguous crosses between mobile homes and camper vans, allowing people to move around. Unlike a standard house, a tiny home can be attached to the back of a truck and get towed around on the road, from city to city.

A tiny home can allow you to travel around the country with the familiar comfort of the bed you made out of RV cushions and being able to make dinner in your own little kitchen. These homes are incredibly mobile and can be parked wherever it meets local zoning department codes.

Communities

The “tiny home movement” is a rather niche group that is starting to gain traction. From figuring out where you can park your home to figuring out how to set up a functioning plumbing system, there is a community out there filled with people excited to help. The movement represents more than just a preference for cozy homes, but also a mobile and minimalistic lifestyle.

Very Customizable

Since tiny homes are usually built from scratch, this gives tiny home owners the freedom to really customize the house as they see fit. If you want to build a bed that can convert into a dining table, you can head over to The Foam Factory for supplies and design it the way you want.

From the materials used to the layout, tiny homes truly force owners to focus on what is essential to them. The small size really gives you the freedom to customize the house to fit your personality and way of living.
